What we do

Renewed Hope Trust has three main projects:

  • East Surrey Winter Night Shelter – provision for the homeless during the coldest months of the year
  • Weekday Drop-In – runs Monday to Friday from 11am-3pm. Year-round support for people struggling with life. A free lunch and refreshments are available.
  • The Real Meal – held weekly on Sundays at 12pm at Shrewsbury Chapel in Redhill. Guests enjoy a free lunch alongside an informal, optional church service.

East Surrey Winter Night Shelter

The East Surrey Winter Night Shelter runs from December to March and is hosted at churches across East Surrey. With the help and dedication of a large team of trained volunteers from Chipstead, Horley, Merstham, Redhill, Reigate, South Nutfield and Warlingham, we provide a safe place to sleep for people who find themselves homeless during the coldest months of the year.

The guests are referred by one of our partners agencies, which include Reigate and banstead Borough Council, Tandridge District Council, East Surrey Outreach Service and the probation Service. On referral, we interview them to make sure the Winter Night Shelter will be the safest and most suitable option for them.

“This has made my time living on the streets bearable. If the night shelters were not there, I don’t know where I would be now.”

“It was well run but relaxed, no fuss. Friendly with no feeling of ‘them’ and ‘us’ even though one or two kept themselves to themselves.”

Drop-In – weekdays 11am to 3pm

Our daytime Drop-In runs is open to everyone. It particularly attracts lonely, homeless or unemployed people struggling with a range of issues. They all need a friendly face and a listening ear. It provides them with a non-judgmental environment and a community in which they can be themselves. Services we offer include:

  • Serving a free lunch and refreshments
  • Giving out vouchers for Foodbanks
  • Providing emotional and practical support liaising with other agencies such as Catalyst, Community Debt Advice, East Surrey Outreach Service (eSOS), Furnistore, YMCA, Salvation Army and Welcare
  • We can help people make contact and support them in engaging with statutory bodies including council housing departments and housing associations, Job Centre Plus, Department of Work & Pensions, the Probation Service and the health services.

“Drop-In is like a family. It’s a place where I can come to belong. Sometimes I might be a helper and other times I just want to sit and chat. You can just be yourself here.” Drop-inner

The Real Meal on Sundays – 1pm

Sunday is traditionally a day when our night shelter guests and drop-inners struggle to find company and meaningful activities. To help fulfill that need, we have the Real Meal at Shrewsbury Chapel in Redhill, where we hold the lease. Churches in the area work on a rota to provide a free lunch. Unlike our other activities, The Real Meal is an activity where the Christian message is preached and guests are welcome to stay or leave during this part of the session.
